Examples of Wage calculations

Here are further examples of wage calculations –

Example 1 : Anna works in the supermarket and is paid \$9.85 per hour. What is her wages in a week during which she works 22 hours?

To calculate the total wages, we multiply the hourly rate by the number of hours worked.

So Anna’s weekly wage  =  \$9.85  x  22  =  \$216.70

Example 2 : Tom is an apprentice carpenter and earned \$327.50 last week. What is his hourly rate when he worked 25 hours last week?

To calculate hourly rate, we divide the weekly wages by the number of hours worked.

So Tom’s hourly rate  =  \$327.50  ÷  25  =  \$13.10

Example 3 : Peter has casual work for which he is paid \$ 7.60 per hour Monday to Friday, and \$9.75 per hour on the weekends. Calculate his total pay for a week in which he worked 4 pm to 8 pm on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and worked 9 am to 2 pm on Saturday and Sunday.

First we need to work out the number of hours Peter worked during Monday to Friday. Similarly we need to then work out the number of hours he worked during the weekends.

Number of hours worked Monday, Wednesday, Friday  =  4 hours per day  =  4  x  3  =  12 hours

Number of hours worked on weekend  =  5 hours per day  =  5  x  2  =  10 hours

Peter’s wages per week  =  wages earned during the weekdays  +  wages earned during the weekend.

=  12  x  7.60  +  10  x  9.75

=  91.20  +  97.50

=  \$188.70

Example 4 : A junior solicitor earns \$78,355 per year. If he works a 42 hour week, how much does he earn per hour, per fortnight and per month.

a) Per hour : Total number of hours worked in a year  =  42 hours/week x 52 weeks = 2184 hours

Earnings per hour  =  Total earnings  ÷  number of hours worked

=  78,355  ÷  2184

=  \$35.88 (to the nearest cent)

b) Per fortnight : Total earnings per fortnight  =  hours worked  x  hourly rate

=  42  x  2  x  35.88

=  \$3,013.92

c) Per month : Total earnings per month  =  total earnings  ÷ 12

=  78,355  ÷  12

=  \$6,529.58

Example 5 : A trainee chef is paid \$ 172.35 each day for working from 6 am to 3.30 pm every week day. If he works 6 days a week, calculate how much he is paid per hour, per week and per year.

a) Per hour : His working hours are 6 am to 3.30 pm, that is 9.5 hours in all.

So, his hourly rate  =  172.35  ÷  9.5

=  \$18.14

b) Per week : Since he works 6 days a week, his weekly wages  =  172.35  x  6

=  \$1034.10

c) Per year : Since there are 52 weeks per year, his yearly wages  =  1034.10  x  52

=  \$53,773.20
